There are approximately 26 ski area in NZ, 4 in north island(city: Auckland, Willington....etc.) and 22 in south island(city: Christchurch, Dunedin....etc.).
Big ones are: Whakapapa, Turoa in centre north island. Brocken River, Porter Heights, Mt. hutt, Cardrona, The Remarkables in south island.
I stay in south island, so I know more info of ski area in south. There were two I have been to, Mt. hutt and Cardrona.
Brocken River, Porter Heights and Mt. Hutt, are pretty close to each other, about 2.5 hours drive from Christchurch which is the third (or second?) biggest city in NZ. There is a town call Methven very close to Mt.Hutt, heaps skiier and snowboarder stay there during the season.
Cardrona and The Remarkables are both close to Queenstown which is most beautiful (personal preferance..ha..) town in the south island (i reckon in whole NZ..). It is a tourist town anyway. Cardrona is close to another town call Wanaka. Wanaka is a small town, but also very very nice!! If u are sick of "people hill people sea", u will LOVE it!! anyway, its much cheaper to stay in Wanaka than in Queenstown.
More information will be post in the "INTERNATION BOARD", if needed..
