BOARD BIBLE

Boardism:
The Snow Culture

In the beginning there was a world plagued with boredom and monotony. A world that had not yet experienced excitement, had not yet felt the rush of what was soon to be a craze, a lifestyle, and a religion; snowboarding. Snowboarding is not only the art of gliding down the hill and through the air with elegance and ease, it is a passion… it is the structure of our belief.
Craig Kelly is a martyr similar to the well-known and worshipped Jesus Christ, a man who died for his beliefs and for the good of others. His death was an example of the lifestyle our culture worships. He died in a moment of exhilaration, experiencing a new level of freedom. An avalanche took his life when freeriding in fresh powder in the backcountry of British Columbia. He is the father of backcountry riding, the guru of the spirituality involved in becoming one with the mountain that you ride. This religion exists because the state of mind of Craig Kelly and the common traits associated with snowboarding can be related to life on and off of the hill.
Snowboarding is an activity of recreation and leisure. When enjoying the physical aspect that is known as riding, a boarder, or shredder often finds themselves stopping to enjoy what is around them. Off of the hill, a boarder grows accustomed to this habit and believes in doing things at their own rate. It is important to understand that time is the most valuable possession a snowboarder has, and should not be handed to controlling forces like watches and school bells. This freedom is represented by the attire affiliated with Boardism, the common pajama pants, often accompanied by a large hoody or baggy shirt. These clothes represent a laid-back freedom and comfort in what has become an uptight society.
The Amendments associated with this religion are few, and these few rules are simple. They are designed to exist without confusion or misinterpretation. Let these rules guide you and may your life be merry:
THE AMENDMENTS OF THE RIDER
1. Thou shalt ride.
This rule is to be followed whenever possible. A true follower will ride whenever it is possible, no matter what may stand in the way. Religious holidays are not assigned to specific dates, but are to be taken when conditions call to you.
2. Thou shalt relax.
Time spent off of the hill must be used carefully to prepare for your more valuable time spent on the hill. This entitles an off-hill lifestyle dedicated to relaxing your muscles and mind. Over exertion of the body or mind is in now way accepted and should be avoided at all costs.
3. Thou shalt take it easy.
Our attitude is an important representation of our culture. The laid-back and peaceful lifestyle is promoted and encouraged by boardism. Confrontation is to be avoided except with boardisms natural enemy; the skier.
4. Thou shalt annoy the skier.
The skier is responsible for all things negative in the life of the boarder. They chop up the jumps and cut up the run. They wipe off the powder and create gouges in our rails. They are our enemy. It is your duty as a boarder and as a human being to end the reign of the skier by violence and discrimination. The skier is and will always be “slope scum”.
5. Thou shalt not be a wimp.
When on or off the mountain, this rule applies to all boarders. You shalt always be manly. This contributes to the “NO WIMPS” affiliation that boarders are known for. All boarders must live up to this reputation or WILL never be known as a true “shredder.” When confronting big-air opportunities and/or steep slopes, (this includes moguls) thou shalt take the challenge therefore contributing to the “NO WIMPS,” category.

6. Thou shalt ALWAYS take air and/or powder opportunities.
This applies to boarders big and small; of ALL ages. If approaching an air opportunity, thou shalt accept. If this challenge is not accepted, it contradicts with law #5: “Thou shalt not be wimp.” By not taking the air – opportunity, u are breaking the 5th law which CLEARLY states that all air opportunities MUST be taken. By not taking this air, whether big or small, you are not contributing to the “NO WIMPS,” category. True boarders will and MUST always take air/powder opportunities.
PLEASE NOT : ALL AIR MUST BE ATLEAST OVER A FOOT TO BE CONSIDERED “AIR,” IF NOT, YOU ARE NOT ABIDING BY THE 6TH AMEDMENT.

7. Though shalt avoid ski patrol.
All boarders are to stay clear of ski partrol. If you encounter a boarder patrol, they are accepted. Always stay clear of ski patrol. They will sometimes contradict to amendment number 6. In which not allowing for speed an or air. They ruin our slopes, not protect them. If a true accident were to occur on the mountain, a true shredder shall carry down to safety. (this is the ONLY exception to skiers, if in harm, you must take them to safety, against your will.) Ski patrol think they own the slopes, and keep the mountain safe, but what is really happening, they screw up the slopes…this strips the fresh untracked powder down. Ski patrol make excuses as to searching runs for people, when in fact they are finding the sickest runs of all to have fun. They are mountain scum and should be avoided at all costs.

8. Though shalt always search for fresh powder.
When off the mountain, after a fresh snow, true boarders shall not wait because of laziness or tiredness. They shall always awake on time and be first on the mountain. Once on the mountain, boarders shall always go to the best powder runs. All through the day the boarder shall and must search the mountain for fresh powder. With no giving up on the search or you shall be contradicting with law #6. ALWAYS search for the untracked until runs are all tracked out.

9. Thou shalt laugh at fallen skiers.
In the case of a skier beef, all boarders must laugh or make some gesture. But boarders are only permitted to laugh and/or gesture if to ask the skier after the gesture if he/she is alright. If skier responds with any sign of an ok, thou boarder shalt laugh until it is out of the system.
THIS LAW DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE LAUGHING OF PEE-WEE SKIERS.

10. Thou shalt fit as many runs as possible into a lift ticket.
The rider must always find first tracks and ride with an aggressive attitude if short on time. Thou shalt always try to fit as many runs as possible into a lift ticket unless ticket for multiple days is used. This calls for aggressive riding/dodging of skiers. This accounts for all riders short of time. And let us all say....Amen.

*IN THE ABIDING OF THIS LAW, THOU SHALT NOT OVER EXURT THEMSELVES FOR THE RUN. IF FEELING TIRED, TAKE A BREAK AND ENJOY THE FRESHNESS AROUND YOU, THIS IS THE ONLY EXCPETION.
